UAAP: Aldin Ayo's 'Mayhem' is here, but order is back in UST
UST is confident it is headed in the right direction under the guidance of multi-titled mentor Aldin Ayo

HOW’D THEY DO LAST SEASON? 1-13, eighth

YES, THEY’RE STILL HERE: Steve Akomo, Zachy Huang, Marvin Lee

WELCOME TO THE FAMILY: CJ Cansino, Makoy Marcos, Ken Zamora, Renzo Subido (returning), Aldin Ayo (coach)

GOOD LUCK ON FUTURE ENDEAVORS: Jordan Sta. Ana, Reggie Boy Basibas, Jeepy Faundo, Boy Sablan (coach)

WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT FROM UST?

University of Sto. Tomas only has four wins to show for all its troubles in the last two seasons – the last two seasons coming after a runner-up finish in Season 79.

This is uncharted territory, to say the least, for the storied program – standing at second in the championship leaderboard with 18.

Enter Aldin Ayo who brings with him all the credentials and all the confidence to turn things around with a system predicated on pressure defense and free-flowing offense.

After all, Ayo had already led Colegio de San Juan de Letran to a Cinderella championship in 2015 and then De La Salle University in living up to the billing as title favorite in 2016.

Now, the minimum for the fiery mentor is just to better the Growling Tigers’ 1-13 standing from a year ago – a task that is, without a doubt, a doable one for the credentialed and confident coach.

“We just want to compete. We just want to stay competitive. Hindi kami nag-iisip ng resulta and we’re just gonna do our best.” – head coach Aldin Ayo

WHO IS/ARE THE PLAYER/S TO WATCH OUT FOR FROM UST?

Seeing that this is an Aldin Ayo team, there is sure to be a spitfire guard scorching the nets. In UST, he will have two of those in veteran Marvin Lee and returning Renzo Subido.

“Si Marvin, si Renzo, sila yung nagse-set ng example and they’ve been guiding the rookies.” – head coach Aldin Ayo

After strong showings in the Filoil Preseason, breakout seasons seem to also be in order for Zach Huang, a versatile forward from Cebu, and Ken Zamora, a sniper transferee from Arellano University.

Of course, reigning UAAP Juniors MVP CJ Cansino has all the tools to be a star, but while much is expected from him, he can also take his time in growing into his own in the Seniors.

“Matagal na nilang sinuko sarili nila sa sistema.” – head coach Aldin Ayo

WHY SHOULD WE ROOT FOR UST?

In Letran, Aldin Ayo was the ultimate underdog – guiding a scrappy squad onto toppling dynastic San Beda University.

In La Salle, he had the biggest target on his back – yet still persevered for one championship and one runner-up finish.

Now in UST, he is back to where he wants to be – an ultimate underdog with an unheralded team nobody is expecting much from.

“Of course, I am very much familiar with this kind of situation. Alam ko kung paano i-handle.” – head coach Aldin Ayo

That is exactly the Aldin Ayo we love – the ultimate underdog.

WHERE WOULD UST BE AT THE END OF UAAP SEASON 81?

UST is rebuilding, and even multi-titled mentor Aldin Ayo knows it. It will take a miracle to even come close to the Final Four.

At the same time though, you can bet that the Growling Tigers will not be trudging through another one-win season with coach Aldin on the sidelines.

“Gusto kong makita na lumalaban kami up to the last second.” – head coach Aldin Ayo

WHEN IS UST’S FIRST GAME IN UAAP SEASON 81?

Aldin Ayo rekindles his personal rivalry with Jamike Jarin as UST clashes with National University to start the season on September 7.

Of course, It All Begins Here on S+A, S+A HD, LIGA, LIGA HD, and livestream.
