UAAP: This is Season 3 of the Alvin Pasaol Show in UE

UE's rebuild already has just exactly what it needs - a building block in Alvin Pasaol
HOW’D THEY DO LAST SEASON? 3-11, seventh
YES, THEY’RE STILL HERE: Wilson Bartolome, Mark Maloles, Philip Manalang, Alvin Pasaol, Jason Varilla
WELCOME TO THE FAMILY: Jojo Antiporda, Ric Gallardo, Joe Silva (coach)
GOOD LUCK ON FUTURE ENDEAVORS: Clark Derige, Derrick Pumaren (coach)
WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT FROM UE?
University of the East will go wherever Alvin Pasaol will take them.
“No excuses. We’re going to try to compete. We’re going to try to at least, sneak in some wins.” – head coach Joe Silva
Pasaol is both the engine and the fuel that will dictate the direction of Joe Silva’s first year as head coach in the Seniors.
While wherever they may be going may not be that far just yet, what’s certain is that the Red Warriors are headed on the right track.
Just think of this season as all the time coach Joe needs to lay the groundwork for his system and philosophy.
“I don’t put pressure on myself kasi baka kainin ka nyan. For me, it’s all about one game at a time. If I achieve success, I’m good and if not, okay lang din, pero at least, I’m able to prove my wares in the Seniors.” – head coach Joe Silva
After all this, the ultimate goal is for Pasaol and company to be all in with coach Joe.
“Gusto kong ibalik yung mentality ng warrior. Yung kahit dehado, kahit hanggang kamatayan, you’ll offer yourself for your family, for your school. Yung gusto ko, palag lang kami – 40 minutes, the first buzzer to the final buzzer.” – head coach Joe Silva
When that is done and next season comes, with the likes of 6-foot-9 Senegalese Alex Diakhite, versatile Filipino-Kiwi forward Richie Rodgers, and former Ateneo de Manila University big John Apacible, then watch out for UE.
WHO IS/ARE THE PLAYER/S TO WATCH OUT FOR FROM UE?
We all know what we’re going to get from Alvin Pasaol – most of the time, a double-double and sometimes, something like a 49-point scoring spree.
For UE to make some sort of noise, though, Pasaol will need those flanking him to also do their part. That means continued development from the likes of court general Philip Manalang and swingman Jason Varilla.
There are no blue-chip recruits here, but don’t be surprised if there are games where first-year players such as Jojo Antiporda, Ric Gallardo, and Jan Sobrevega make things happen for the Red Warriors.
“To tell you honestly, among all the teams, kami siguro yung isa sa madaming nawala. I told this team that it shouldn’t be an Alvin Pasaol team anymore – it should be the UE Red Warriors.” – head coach Joe Silva
WHY SHOULD WE ROOT FOR UE?
Two words – Alvin Pasaol.
Safe to say, the incoming third-year forward is the unlikeliest superstar in all of the league – a wide-bodied, ground-bound player who nonetheless, nobody can stop.
Pasaol alone makes UE games worth watching – and Pasaol alone makes the Red Warriors worthy to be cheered.
WHERE WOULD UE BE AT THE END OF UAAP SEASON 81?
Alvin Pasaol will do Alvin Pasaol things, but UE’s playoff drought will go on for another year.
“My marching orders were to back this program to its glory years, but for this year, expectations are low. Nobody expects us to contend or compete for a Final Four slot, but of course, we want to prove we belong in the UAAP.” – head coach Joe Silva
Coach Joe is looking at all of this with a long view, however, and their season goal is modest at best. Come next season, it will be a definitely different matter – a bit more patience, Recto, and you’ll be contending once more.
“My main task is to rebuild this program and to build it from the ground up. It’s going to be a rebuilding team this year.” – head coach Joe Silva
WHEN IS UE’S FIRST GAME IN UAAP SEASON 81?
Coach Joe, a two-time UAAP Juniors champion coach, calls his first game in the Seniors for UE up against hyped up University of the Philippines on September 7.
