All eyes are on defending champion Ateneo in UAAP Season 81
Ateneo de Manila University head coach Tab Baldwin, true to form, opted to dance around the topic that they are the favorites in the UAAP 81 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Asked which he thinks is the team to beat, coach Tab answered, “Sorry. I would never give an answer to (that) question.”
He then continued, “Really, my opinion doesn’t matter. We (will) play this season to find that out.”
While coach Tab, doesn’t want to acknowledge that Ateneo is the team to beat, at least two opposing coaches are saying such.
“Everyone has a fair chance, but the best chance, siyempre, is Ateneo,” Far Eastern University mentor Olsen Racela said. “I think I’ll be surprised if they lost a game in the eliminations.”
Yes, the Tamaraws tactician is hinting at a prediction that the defending champions will sweep – the elimination round, at the very least.
University of the East head coach Joe Silva agrees that the Blue Eagles are right there at the top. As he put it, “(It’s) Ateneo, and then everybody else.”
For their part, Adamson University, De La Salle University, and University of Sto. Tomas said they would prefer not to make any guarantees.
“We’re not looking that far ahead. The teams this year, they’re all very competitive,” Soaring Falcons assistant coach Don Allado said.
Green Archers head coach Louie Gonzalez followed suit by saying, “All the teams are very much competitive.”
To end the round of questioning, assistant coach Nap Garcia of the Growling Tigers put it simply, “No predictions.”
