After several starts and stops, Troy Rike will be playing for NU in UAAP Season 81
National University already has a buzzer-beater even before the beginning of the Season 81 of the Men’s Basketball Tournament.
The Bulldogs have found a way around the eligibility issue that once hovered over prized prospect Troy Rike.
“Troy Rike will play this Saturday,” head coach Jamike Jarin pronounced in the preseason press conference on Monday at the MOA Arena.
NU opens the season up against University of Sto. Tomas on Saturday, also at the MOA Arena.
There, they will have their new big man in Rike whom they hope will be the final piece in their puzzle.
This, not even a week after the Gilas cadet posted on social media that he “will not be able to play.”
As it turns out, NU found a way around the issue as, according to sources, first and foremost, it requested an extension from the eligibility committee.
That granted Rike much-needed time to take care of the papers he needed.
The Filipino-American played for four years for Wake Forest University in the US NCAA before coming back home to the Philippines to suit up for the Gilas cadets in the recently concluded 2018 Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup.
He already holds a bachelor’s degree from Wake Forest, but has enrolled for a master’s degree in NU.
As per UAAP rules, a student-athlete from a non-member school who is pursuing graduate studies in a member school shall not be subject to residency.
As a post-graduate student, however, Rike will only have one year of eligibility for the Bulldogs.
