UAAP: First semester sports ready to tip off Season 81

Season 81 host National University will immediately defend its UAAP chess championship, just five months after winning a third consecutive men's crown.

Based on the league's Season 81 athletic events timeline that was released this week, chess will be the first sport that will be played outside of basketball on September 15 at the University of Santo Tomas' Quadricentennial Pavilion.

De La Salle  University will also stake its title in the women's division.

From a second semester sport, chess was moved to first semester along with fencing and athletics.

Fencing, University of the East's main source of championships, is set on Nov. 22-25 at the Victoria Sports Complex in Quezon City, while athletics, which has been ruled by Far Eastern University men's and UST women's teams in the past few years, is scheduled on November 28 - December 2.

After chess, table tennis will be the next sport to open on September 23 at the University of the Philippines' CHK Gym.

Also on tap in first semester are beach volleyball at Sands SM By The Bay on September 24, badminton also on September 24, taekwondo and poomsae on November 8 at the Blue Eagle Gym, swimming on November 8 at the Rizal Memorial Swimming Pool, and judo, which the schedule will be announced later.

In the high school division, girls and boys volleyball will begin on October 13 at the Blue Eagle Gym, juniors basketball on Nov. 11 at the Blue Eagle Gym, and juniors football on December 1 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium. 

UST, the league's most successful sports program, is eyeing for a seniors and juniors general championship sweep for the third straight season.

The Growling Tigers annexed their 42th seniors title overall last season, while the Tiger Cubs also emerged triumphant in the juniors side for the 18th time.
