UAAP: Ildefonso outduels Cansino as Bulldogs outlast Tigers
Dave Ildefonso made an immediate impact in just his very first game for NU

Behind strong showings from Ildefonso brothers Dave and Shaun, National University got off to a strong start in the UAAP 81 Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Dave didn’t look like a rookie while kuya Shaun made a living down low as the Bulldogs downed very game University of Sto. Tomas, 75-70, on Saturday at the MOA Arena.

The younger Ildefonso, a prized recruit from champion Ateneo de Manila High School, made an immediate impact.

Still, the Growling Tigers kept coming and pulled to within 68-72 inside the last two minutes. “We played really good in the third quarter, but did not play selfless in the fourth. It’s a sign that we are a young team, but we need to mature fast,” NU head coach Jamike Jarin said post-game.

Fortunately for coach Jamike, his defense stood strong from that point, however, just as John Lloyd Clemente put the finishing touches on a confidence-boosting win to start the season.

Dave wound up with 19 points, seven rebounds, and three assists while kuya Shaun posted his own 10-point, 11-rebound double-double.

Troy Rike, after the emotional roller-coaster he has been in the past weeks, also contributed six points and seven rebounds.

All those new faces helped coach Jamike score his first win in the UAAP up against Aldin Ayo, now with UST. “I’d like to comment UST’s coaching staff headed by Aldin Ayo. They did a good job against us,” he said.

For the Growling Tigers, super rookie CJ Cansino gave it his all with a total of 20 points and 10 rebounds. The backcourt of Renzo Subido and Marvin Lee have to do better, however, after combining for 21 points in 8-of-43 shooting.
