Juan GDL stuffed the stat sheet as UP started the season strong
The first basket in the 81st Season of the UAAP Men’s Basketball Tournament was courtesy of Juan Gomez de Liano.
Last season's Rookie of the Year sprinted from behind the arc right to the ring before taking and making a tough shot.
That was just the start for him as he played his way to a 16-point, 7-rebound, 6-assist performance in University of the Philippines’ big-time victory versus University of the East to start the season.
Along with the numbers, Juan GDL also recorded several highlights – which actually didn’t have him scoring.
The first was an alley-oop to first-year player David Murrell.
The next was a beautiful bounce pass to kuya Javi.
And the other was a drop pass again to big bro.
For the Fighting Maroons’ rising star, those just came naturally in his game. “That’s just what I do ever since. It’s not fancy naman eh, it’s accurate,” he told reporters post-game.
And his promise is that he will continue doing just that, and anything and everything, to help State U in its quest for a first Final Four since 1997. “Coach Bo [Perasol] told me to become a leader for this team so I’ll just continue creating for them,” he said.
Even with the big win, however, Juan GDL said he and his teammates aren’t looking too far ahead. “It’s just the first win. We can’t expect anything else,” he shared.
He then continued, “For me and my teammates, on to the next one.”
