CJ Cansino wowed in his UAAP Seniors debut
CJ Cansino lived up to the hype in just his first game in the UAAP 81 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
University of Sto. Tomas’ super rookie topped the scoring column for his side with 20 points on top of 10 rebounds.
Cansino also dropped half of his output in the final frame, fronting their fightback from 17 points down. “I just want to win kahit down by (17). Sabi ko, baka may magawa (pa) ako kaya I just attacked the basket,” he told reporters post-game.
Of course, the rally fell short and the Growling Tigers suffered a setback to open their campaign.
Showing maturity beyond his years, the 18-year-old acknowledged that he could have played a lot better. “Medyo masakit kasi talo kami. Sa akin, more on sa defense kasi palagi akong nabo-blow by,” he shared.
He then continued, “A lot to improve on.”
Indeed, Cansino was opposite fellow super rookie Dave Ildefonso for majority of the matchup and the latter fired 19 points on the former.
In the end, UST’s prized prospect had nothing but high praise for his counterpart in NU. “Si Dave, magaling talaga siya. Mautak tapos ang laki ng katawan kaya kain ako sa post,” he said.
Still, Cansino said that the loss will only serve as a lesson for them. “Good sign para sa amin yung natutunan namin this game. Talo man kami, this will make us a better team,” he said.
The UAAP Juniors MVP then continued, “Next games, I’ll just still do my best, I’ll just still compete.”
