CJ Cansino is the first and foremost reason for UST to hope
Without a doubt, CJ Cansino has wasted no time in proving his worth in the UAAP 81 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
University of Sto. Tomas’ super rookie has been averaging 13.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 1.5 assists through one win and one loss for him and his team.
Those numbers may not be exactly the same from the per game counts of 24.6 points, 12.9 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.4 steals he posted en route to the MVP award in his last season as a Tiger Cub, but he has made an impact in the seniors division.
While his ability to score from all over has always been his calling card, Cansino’s rebounding numbers were all but expected to go down.
Why? Because he only stands at 6 foot 2 and is yet to grow into his body.
Fortunately for the faithful over at Espana, the 18-year-old has only proven those expectations wrong.
Apparently, Cansino truly is a great rebounder.
That is exactly because more than size, the Growling Tigers’ rising star has the determination to get all those boards. “Yung rebound kasi, hindi pataasan ng talon, hindi patangkaran, kundi sa sipag. Ako po, dine-dedicate ko talaga yung buong pagkatao sa rebound,” he said.
With Cansino leading their youth movement, head coach Aldin Ayo is nothing but confident that UST is on the right path. “We’re a very young team – nine rookies, isa lang senior. Yung mga rookies, still adjusting, pero good thing nilalabas lang laro nila,” he said.
