Aljun Melecio has a chip on his shoulder any time he plays NU
Aljun Melecio bounced back big-time from an off-game to open the UAAP 81 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Scoring 19 points on top of four rebounds and two assists, Melecio teamed up with Justine Baltazar to tow De La Salle University past National University on Wednesday.
Along with wanting to will his team to their first win, however, apparently, the third-year playmaker has extra fuel to the fire because of who he was facing. “Siguro, feeling ko lang, may hugot from high school. Tinalo kami nung Finals e,” he said while laughing.
Back in his last year in the Juniors, Melecio shot La Salle Zobel to the Finals only to run into the buzzsaw that was Nazareth School of NU.
Also, before he committed to the Green Archers, the Bulldogs were serious contenders to lure him away.
Safe to say, the 5-foot-8 has had quite a history with NU.
Still, turning serious, he made it clear that this was just another game for him. “Pero wala rin naman. Laro lang talaga,” he said.
For Melecio, all he did was heed the call of head coach Louie Gonzalez. “Sometimes, nawawala ako sa pagiging leader, pero kelangan kasi na ako, Kib [Montalbo], and Andrei [Caracut], kailangan na mag-step up as leaders para maayos yung team,” he said.
In that case, he said he only wants to build on this bounce back game. “More than scoring, gusto kong ipakita na I can set up my teammates also. Yun talaga yung gustong i-develop ni coach Louie,” he said.
