Just yesterday, the dangerous but hobbling Perpetual Help Altas pulled off what many believed was impossible: beating Lyceum in the elimination round.
The Pirates started the season 12-0, and was on a 30-game winning streak in the elimination round, but the Altas were able to do it care of a buzzer-beater by reinforcement Prince Eze.
Coincidentally, on this day 16 years ago, September 22, 2002, Ateneo and Gec Chia pulled off a stunner of their own.
Up one game against the number two seed UE Red Warriors that had stars like Paul Artadi and James Yap in the UAAP Season 65 Final Four, third-seed Ateneo found itself tied in Game 2 at 70-all two with 7.8 seconds left.
Ateneo point guard LA Tenorio got trapped momentarily but he was able to kick it out to Chia who rose up for the contested jumper through two defenders. It was good, right at the buzzer.
The shot sent the Blue Eagles to the Finals against the number one seed and three-time defending champion Green Archers, where they would be able to grind out a tough Game 3 win to secure the championship and to exact revenge.
With one shot, Chia was able to jumpstart the Blue Eagles' renaissance, while also denying the UE Red Warriors their 19th basketball title as well as ending La Salle's four-peat hopes.
