Javi GDL promised the UP faithful that the best is yet to come
Javi Gomez de Liano finally busted out in the UAAP 81 Mens Basketball Tournament.
Up against Far Eastern University on Sunday, the second of the GDL brothers scored a season-high 15 points to go along with three rebounds.
Only, his best game in his third year in the UAAP Seniors came in a loss for the University of the Philippines.
That is exactly why Javi GDL said he doesn’t feel that this was his breakout game. “I wouldn’t say I played well because I made some turnovers and I missed those near shots na dapat, sure in na,” he shared.
Still, without a doubt, it was the versatile forward who was one of those at the forefront of the fight for the Maroons. “They just wanted me to play defense on the court and that was the key for me playing long on the court,” he said, referring to his season-high 24 minutes.
Asked if he is looking forward to build on this momentum, Javi GDL answered that he has already been doing just that. As he put it, “As a player, I make sure I don’t really lose my confidence. Either I play or not, I just make sure that when coach needs someone of the bench to help out, I’ll just be ready.”
And so, the 19-year-old only vows to do much more – especially now that the Fighting Maroons have suffered a second straight setback following a big-time season-opening win. “We’ve been in this situation so it’s nothing new, really. Hopefully, we know what we’re going to do next game,” he said.
He then continued, “We have to double our effort. That’s what we have to do.”
