UAAP: FEU outclasses UP in wire-to-wire win
FEU returned to its winning ways while also sending upstart UP to back-to-back losses
Far Eastern University had no problems whatsoever in handling upstart University of the Philippines on Sunday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Prince Orizu, Wendell Comboy, and Jasper Parker were an inside-outside force, but all of the Tamaraws also did their part as they trampled all over the Fighting Maroons for a 16-point rout, 89-73.
Starting strong with an 8-0 blast, FEU’s charge would not be stopped all the way to a return to the win column now at 2-1 in the UAAP 81 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Orizu, Parker, and Ken Tuffin were on-point right from tip-off just as their defense was. “It was a defensive game para sa amin. Yung opensa namin, bonus lang so good job by everyone because the players stuck to our game plan,” head coach Olsen Racela said post-game.
Behind Javi Gomez de Liano, though, State U battled back to just 31-37 at the midway mark of the second only to see the Tamaraws respond with a 26-8 rush that mounted a 63-39 lead in the middle of the third.
The contest would not be close the rest of the way.
Orizu wound up with 15 points, seven rebounds, and one block all while clamping down on counterpart Bright Akhuetie who only had nine points.
Comboy finished with 12 points, five rebounds, and five assists while Parker ended up with 11 markers, six boards, and six dimes as FEU forged a tie for the second spot with Ateneo de Manila University.
On the other hand, UP suffered its second straight setback following a big-time win to start the season. Javi GDL wound up with his best game of the season with 15 points and seven rebounds while brother Juan chipped in 13 markers, three rebounds, and two assists.
They will need much more from Akhuetie and Paul Desiderio, however, if they are to fight their way back inside the winners’ circle.
