Coach Tab Baldwin acknowledged that he didn't have to say what he said about Dave Ildefonso
Ateneo de Manila University head coach Tab Baldwin has backtracked on the statement he made about National University rookie Dave Ildefonso last Saturday.
“My intent was to highlight the competitive nature of recruiting. I did not mean to cause Dave, his family, or the NU team and community any displeasure with my answer,” the reigning and defending champion coach said on Monday. “Therefore, to them all, I offer my sincerest apologies.”
After the Blue Eagles downed the Bulldogs, coach Tab said in the post-win interview that they really made it a point to shackle down Ildefonso. “I think we wanted Dave to rethink that decision or perhaps, in hindsight, wonder why he made that decision,” he said.
For the past three years, Ildefonso had worn the blue and white as a Blue Eaglets and in his last season there, won a championship.
And so, the Ateneo Seniors squad did its all to keep the graduating players from that championship team – Ildefonso, SJ Belangel, Jason Credo, and Joaqui Manuel – together.
Only Belangel and Credo stayed, however, while Ildefonso and Manuel transferred to NU and De La Salle University, respectively.
Told about coach Tab’s statement, Ildefonso said he has no regrets about his decision. “I don’t think I made the wrong decision in switching schools. Whatever statement they were sending me, I didn’t get it,” he said.
Three days later, the Blue Eagles mentor admitted that, all in all, he didn’t have to say what he said. “In hindsight, my reference to Dave and his decision was entirely unnecessary,” he said.
