Balanced Ateneo overwhelms UE for third win in a row in UAAP 81
All of Ateneo contributed as they made quick work of winless UE
In just the first 12 minutes on Wednesday at the Filoil Flying V Centre, Ateneo de Manila University already had 10 players contributing in scoring.
That total team effort would only continue until the final buzzer as the Blue Eagles pounded on already grounded University of the East, 89-62, to stretch their streak to three in a row in the UAAP 81 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
After a loss to start their title defense, the defending champions now stand at solo second with a 3-1 standing. “We are quite happy with the result. Coming into this game, we gave importance to our rebounds,” assistant coach Sandy Arrespacochaga said post-game.
In the end, they dominated the glass, 46-27.
Still, the Red Warriors actually began the game with back-to-back baskets only to see Ateneo go on a 29-8 tear to mount a 29-12 advantage.
Through that tear, 10 players made at least one basket, led by Raffy Verano who wound up a season-high 12 points on top of four rebounds, two assists, and two steals before coming out of the contest due to what appeared as a right ankle sprain.
William Navarro also added 11 points, five rebounds, and three assists as, in the end, 13 Blue Eagles appeared in the scoring column.
For UE, Alvin Pasaol showed the way as always with 17 points and eight rebounds. Still, they remain winless through four games.
