Ateneo's Blue Eaglets turned Blue Eagles are just getting better and better - just as UE is just getting better and better in the first year of head coach Joe Silva
Joe Silva spent the past seven years as head coach of Ateneo de Manila High School.
Last season, he also sat on the bench of Ateneo’s Seniors program.
On Wednesday, however, coach Joe found himself opposite the Ateneo bench, wearing red instead of blue.
The two-time UAAP Juniors champion coach, now guiding University of the East, fell to his former team, 62-89.
It was Raffy Verano and William Navarro who showed the way for the Blue Eagles, but all of BJ Andrade, Anton Asistio, SJ Belangel, Aaron Black, Gian Mamuyac, Jolo Mendoza, Thirdy Ravena, and Nieto twins Matt and Mike also played a part.
Those nine players merged for 43 points.
Those nine players just so happened to be former Blue Eaglets – former Blue Eagles who played under coach Joe.
Instead of being down, however, the now-Red Warriors’ mentor was actually glad to see his former wards still doing great. “Ako, sobrang happy ako. They’re performing as they should plus they’re getting better because of Coach Tab [Baldwin] and his system,” he said.
For their part, the Ateneo players said they’re also actually glad to see their ex-coach giving his best in UE’s quest for a return to relevance. “Maganda rin naman yung laban ng UE. Siguro, yun yung nadala ni Coach Joe – yung winning culture na naging tradition niya sa Ateneo,” Mike Nieto, who played for four years under Coach Joe, said.
He then continued, “Kitang-kita naman fighting spirit ng UE players na kahit lamang na kami nang malaki, ayaw talagang sumuko. Knowing Coach Joe, yun naman talaga tinuturo niya sa players niya.”
Jolo Mendoza, who also had four years with Coach Joe, could only agree. As he put it, “Kay Coach Joe kasi, lahat ng team niya, lumalaban talaga.”
