MVPs Alvin Morada and Ross Lee Pedrosa powered the NU Bulldogs in extending their unbeaten run to 36 ties.National University opened its bid for a fifth consecutive men's title with a 4-1 conquest of Ateneo Thursday in the UAAP Season 81 badminton tournament at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall.
MVPs Alvin Morada and Ross Lee Pedrosa powered the Bulldogs in extending their unbeaten run to 36 ties.
Morada, last season's MVP, and Alem Palmares overcame a close second set to beat Remo and Keoni Asuncion, 21-17, 27-25, in the first doubles.
Pedrosa, a former MVP winner, announced his comeback after an one-year absence with a 21-7, 21-15 romp of Fides Bagasbas in the second singles.
Mike Minuluan defeated Carlo Remo, 21-14, 21-15, in the opening singles and Minuluan returned later to join forces with Dawn Cuyno in sweeping Sean Chan and Sito Fernandez, 21-11, 21-13 in the second doubles.
The Blue Eagles' lone victory came from Asuncion, a 21-19, 21-18 winner over Thirdy Bacalso in the third singles.
In other ties, De La Salle overwhelmed University of the East, 5-0, to seize the early lead while Adamson University entered the win column with a 3-2 squeaker over University of Santo Tomas.
Andrew Pineda led the Green Shuttlers to the shutout win to follow up their season-opening 4-1 victory over the Growling Tigers last Monday.
The Falcons tied the Eagles at 1-1, while the Red Warriors and the Tigers remained winless in two ties.
Women's action saw Ateneo edging women's titleholder De La Salle, 3-2, as Geva de Vera's thrillling 16-21, 22-20, 21-13 win over Iyah Sevilla in the deciding singles keyed the Katipunan-based squad's second straight win.
Sarah Joy Barredo-led NU overpowered UST, 5-0, to also rose at 2-0, while Adamson overwhelmed UE, 5-0, to earn its first win.
The Tigresses and the Lady Warriors fell to 0-2.
