UAAP: Ateneo drops 32-point hammer on UST

Ateneo de Manila University has just registered the largest margin of victory thus far in the UAAP 81 Men’s Basketball Tournament.

On-point on both ends from start to finish, the Blue Eagles stamped their class all over University of Sto. Tomas for an emphatic 85-53 win on Saturday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

The 32-point margin tops the 29-point rout of the University of the Philippines over University of the East in the season opener. “Our players stepped up today and we are happy with the win,” assistant coach Sandy Arrespacochaga said post-game.

The 32-point margin is also the worst loss in the career of now Growling Tigers mentor Aldin Ayo.

The contest was actually close for the first six minutes and UST was only trailing by three until the defending champions went on a 22-8 tear for, all of a sudden, a 33-16 lead at the midway mark of the second quarter.

In that timeframe, first-year foreign student-athlete Angelo Kouame imposed his will and fired 10 points – outscoring all of their opponents by his lonesome.

Ateneo would never look back all the way to its fourth consecutive victory following a season-opening loss.

In the end, Kouame posted a 20-point, 15-rebound double-double to go along with four blocks – without a doubt, the best game in his young career.

Thirdy Ravena was the only other scorer in double-digits with 11 points, but the Blue Eagles counted 14 of the 15 players sent in contributing in the scoring column. “It was a very good effort for our team,” coach Sandy said.

The defense wasn’t so bad either as they only allowed the Growling Tigers to make good on 18 of 68 of their field goals.

Renzo Subido topped the scoring column for them with 19 points while super rookie CJ Cansino had another double-double of 15 markers and 10 rebounds. Steve Akomo and Zachy Huang were the only other players to score more than two points, however, as they dropped to 1-3.
