Aldin Ayo heard all the things the Ateneo crowd was yelling at him
Aldin Ayo has just experienced the biggest loss in his career.
The one-time NCAA and one-time UAAP champion coach was at the wrong end as his University of Sto. Tomas got obliterated by Ateneo de Manila University by 32 points, 53-85, on Saturday.
For coach Aldin, there was only one response after that big a loss. “You have to take that as a man. Ganun talaga e. every time you experience things like this, you become sensitive and you see things na kailangang tanggapin,” he said.
This is only the second time in his four-year collegiate career that the now Growling Tigers mentor was defeated by double-digits.
More than the biggest loss in his career, however, it was something that happened during the game that Coach Aldin said would now play a part in his coaching moving forward. “Narinig niyo mga sinisigaw ng mga Atenista? Naririnig niyo mga sinisigaw,” he told reporters.
Pressed further on what he heard from the Ateneo crowd, the UST head coach opted not to disclose those as they would not be safe for printing and publishing.
Ateneo and Ayo already have a colorful history as before calling the shots for the Growling Tigers, the latter was the tactician for the former’s archrival De La Salle University.
All that matters for Coach Aldin, however, is that whatever was said would only make him and his team better. “It will help us, it will help our program, it will help me personally, it will help the whole team. They’re just fueling our drive to strive more and be better next time,” he said.
In the end, whatever happened to UST during the game and after it is all on the broad shoulders of their first-year mentor. “Even though it’s a 32-point loss, this will not make us a lesser team. This is just one game and I’ll make sure hindi maapektuhan yung confidence ng mga bata,” he shared.
He then continued, “Kasalanan ‘to ng coaching staff, kasalanan ko ‘to. Kulang pa ginagawa namin so baka pag pinagawa na namin yung mga extra, mas makatulong.”
