Sobrang weird nung feeling - Rivero on supporting UP vs DLSU
Now a Fighting Maroon, Ricci Rivero cheers on the opposite side of former team De La Salle University.

Ricci Rivero was standing in the far end of the University of the Philippines' bench when he witnessed his new squad beat his former team De La Salle University, 67-61, in the UAAP Season 81 men's basketball tournament Sunday afternoon at the Mall of Asia Arena.

As per UAAP tradition, the alma mater song of the winning team played first. UP Naming Mahal started and Rivero faced the UP fans with his right fist raised.

"Taas ko na lang kamay ko kahit 'di ko pa alam yung Alma Mater song," quipped the first year Tourism student.

Few moments later, he turned around and sang the De La Salle Alma Mater Hymn too.

When asked how it felt like rooting for UP versus La Salle, he can't deny it was surreal.

"Sobrang weird nung feeling pero syempre kung nasaan ako ngayon, syempre yun ang isusupport ko. Kapag sinabi mo kasing La Salle, parang iba iniisip ng tao eh. Pero itong UP kasi naging special siya to me nung kailangan ko ng next family sila yung tumayong family for me," said the 20-year-old athlete.

"Kahit sobrang tagal ko na sa La Salle ever since I was in first year high school pa, iba kasi yung na feel ko nung pag transfer ko ng UP," he added.

He witnessed the Fighting Maroons preserve their lead in the fourth quarter despite the Green Archers' rally. This victory put an end to UP's three-game losing streak.

During the halftime, Rivero was seen talking to some of his teammates, trying to give his insights to the Fighting Maroons on going against a team he knows too well.

"In a way, yes. Parang kanina sinasabihan ko lang sila Bright [Akhuetie] na mas okay yata kung ganito gawin mo or like okay naman ginawa mo pero baka try mo 'to baka pwede rin. Pero di naman literally na sinasabi ko na ito lang gawin mo kasi basketball players yan eh, alam nila gagawin nila," said Rivero.

Now serving residency before he can suit up officially as a Fighting Maroon for UAAP Season 82, Rivero expressed his excitement to play and his awareness that he needs to do good in his academics too.

"Sobra. Sobrang excited ako ngayon. Nung pag start ko sa UP kasi, nag training ako with them, after Serbia, when we got back here, nag focus ako muna sa studies kasi yun nga malaking transition eh. Masaya kasi yun nga, ibang culture talgaa, sobrang iba. I'm learning a lot from UP," he shared.
