Tamaraws pile onto woes of Bulldogs in UAAP 81
The roller-coaster ride continues for FEU in the UAAP Season 81
Far Eastern University is yet to experience a losing skid in the 81st Season of the UAAP Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Wendell Comboy made sure of that, turning in his best game of the season to shoot the Tamaraws over reeling National University, 73-68, on Wednesday at the MOA Arena.
Comboy scored a season-high 18 points in their bounce back to a 3-2 standing. “Of course, you’re always happy with a bounce back victory,” head coach Olsen Racela said post-game.
In doing so, they also sent the Bulldogs to their fourth loss in a row following a season-opening win.
More important than Comboy’s scoring, however, coach Olsen said his defense played a big part in their win. “He took on the responsibility of being our main defender,” he said.
Indeed, with the gunslinging guard teaming up with Ken Tuffin and Alec Stockton, super rookie Dave Ildefonso was limited to just 11 points in 36 percent shooting.
At the other end, Comboy was backstopped by Ken Tuffin, Arvin Tolentino and L-Jay Gonzales who had nine points apiece as well as Prince Orizu and Richard Escoto who had eight markers each.
Even with the bounce back win, however, coach Olsen wants nothing but consistency from his boys. “Our problem is after naming mag-respond. We have to be consistent with our approach,” coach Olsen said.
On the other hand, much more than consistency is needed by NU to get back on track. John Lloyd Clemente fronted their effort with 15 points on top of five rebounds and four assists.
