Aljun Melecio and La Salle went right at former coach Aldin Ayo and his new team in UST
Aljun Melecio was a man on a mission as he and the rest of De La Salle University sent a statement to University of Sto. Tomas on Wednesday at the MOA Arena.
Melecio scattered 19 points to go along with eight rebounds and two assists and was flanked by Justine Baltazar and Jollo Go as the Green Archers shot down former coach Aldin Ayo and his Growling Tigers, 99-72, for a bounce back win in the UAAP 81 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
The third-year guard was once coach Aldin’s most-wanted recruit and the former wasted no time reminding the latter why. “The primary game plan today was to play forty minutes na composed and at the highest level. Even at the end, they were sticking to the game plan and executing,” head coach Louie Gonzalez said post-game.
Melecio was online right from tip-off and scored five points in La Salle’s 9-2 start to the game.
They would never look back from there as, in the first half alone, the trio of Melecio, Baltazar, and Go outscored all of their opponents, 39-34.
The Green Archers would only build on this momentum en route to their third win in five games.
Baltazar wound up with a career-high 22 points on top of 10 rebounds and three blocks while Go had 11 markers to his name.
Santi Santillan and Andrei Caracut chipped in 13 and 11 points, respectively, as the Taft-based team got a morale-boosting win ahead of their rivalry game opposite Ateneo de Manila University. “It’s not just heading into the weekend kasi kailangan talaga naming manalo para sa standings,” coach Louie said.
On the other hand, the Tigers suffered their third setback in a row and fourth overall in five games. Renzo Subido topped the scoring column for them with 16 points while Marvin Lee and Zach Huang also added 13 markers apiece.
Super rookie CJ Cansino was slowed down to just seven points while also committing seven turnovers to see coach Aldin fall to his former team.
