UST dedicates its rout of UP to ailing big man Steve Akomo
Rallying around ailing Steve Akomo, University of Santo Tomas played inspired basketball and clinched back-to-back wins for the first time under the tutelage of head coach Aldin Ayo, at the expense of the University of the Philippines on Wednesday.
The big man from Cameroon has been confined in the UST Hospital since Monday due to blood clots found in his brain. He is still under medication and observation for brain swelling.
"Of course, this is for Steve. This is for all the players, this is for the community. This is for UST," said Ayo after their dominant win.
Asked about the condition of the graduating big man, Ayo answered, "Okay naman siya, he's fine. I hope he can recover, nothing serious naman pero sana gumaling kasi kawawa yung bata."
They may have had to deal with the bad news of Akomo's condition this week, but the Growling Tigers responded well with the wire-to-wire victory. They led by as much as 30 points in the third quarter.
"We were playing as a team, I think that was the difference, compared to our previous games," Ayo said.
With the victory, UST ended their first round campaign with a 3-4 slate.
