UAAP 81 Volleyball: Blue Eaglets, Bullpups lead opening day winners

National University opened its campaign in the UAAP Season 81 boys volleyball tournament with an upset win over repeat-seeking University of Sto. Tomas.
Nazareth School of National University scored an early upset after toppling defending champion University of Sto. Tomas, 25-21, 25-20, 23-25, 39-37, Saturday in the UAAP Season 81 boys’ volleyball tournament at the Blue Eagle gym.
Lorence Cruz paced the Bullpups with 18 points with all but one coming off attacks while Michael Fortuna and Jomar Ocampo added 12 and 10 markers, respectively.
Rey De Vega’s 25-point effort to carry the repeat-seeking Tigercubs went down the drain after UST gave away 50 points on errors.
Ateneo de Manila University banked on Dominic Cordero and Mikka Mendoza to outlast University of the Philippines, 25-23, 23-25, 22-25, 30-28, 15-10, in the opening match of the season.
Cordero scored 24 points, Mendoza had 15 while Andrei Almadro, son of Lady Eagles coach Oliver Almadro, added eight markers for the Blue Eaglets.
NU and Ateneo were joined in the win column by Far Eastern University and Adamson University.
The Baby Tamaraws beat University of the East in five sets, 23-25, 25-21, 25-19, 22-25, 15-5, while the Baby Falcons swept the Junior Spikers, 25-18, 25-17, 25-17.
