The fresh faces came to play as NU finally barged back into the win column in UAAP Season 81
At long last, National University wielded all of the weapons in its fully stocked arsenal in the UAAP 81 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
John Lloyd Clemente finally busted out and was only flanked by Ildefonso brothers Dave and Shaun as the Bulldogs’ prized recruits ran roughshod on University of the East, 88-61, on Saturday at the MOA Arena.
Clemente, once the pride of NU’s high school program, scattered a career-high 21 points to go along with four rebounds to lead his team in arresting, at long last, a five-game losing slide. “It always feels good when you win. It’s been a long time,” a beaming head coach Jamike Jarin said post-game.
Dave also added 14 points, seven rebounds, and six assists while Shaun had 12 markers and four boards in their climb out of the cellar now at 2-5.
It wasn’t just those three who did the heavy lifting, however, as even the likes of Troy Rike and John Galinato had their hand in the 22-4 run that turned a six-point lead into a 52-28 advantage late in the second quarter.
The Bulldogs would never look back all the way back into the win column at the end of the first round of eliminations. “We’re gonna get up. Hopefully, we’ll just keep on doing this and the results will go in our favor,” coach Jamike said.
All in all, their first-year players including Clemente, Dave Ildefonso, Shaun Ildefonso, Rike, and Galinato combined for 57 points, nearly matching their opponents’ output.
For the Red Warriors, Alvin Pasaol gave his all, as always, with 20 points and nine rebounds. Unable to keep up with their opponent’s young guns, however, they dropped to the bottom of the standings now at 1-6.
