Juan GDL remains winless up against Ateneo - whether that be in the Seniors or in the Juniors
Juan Gomez de Liano has not won against Ateneo de Manila University for five years now.
As a star for the University of the Philippines Integrated School, he went 0-6 against Ateneo High School in the UAAP Juniors.
Now a key cog for the UP Seniors squad, he remains winless in four tries versus the Blue Eagles.
Even worse, in their latest loss to the blue and white on Sunday, Juan GDL also had his worst performance of the season – with just five points in 2-of-10 shooting to go along with four turnovers.
As it turns out, last year’s Rookie of the Year was suffering from high fever.
And yet, he played through it because, in his own words in a previous interview, “Every time we go up against Ateneo, I always go all-out. Always yun.”
In the eyes of head coach Bo Perasol, that was just Juan GDL living up to their team's monicker. “I have to commend him because in the first place, sabi ko sa kanya, ‘You are needed by the team.’ This is just him showing character that no matter how I'm feeling, I will help my team,” he said.
In doing so, the pride of State U had to head to the clinic right after getting changed in the dugout.
And after getting checked there, he had to go straight home to finally get some much-needed rest.
And so, for now, Juan GDL has been downed by both a high fever and the nightmare that is Ateneo.
Without a doubt, thought, all of this is just fueling his fire to get back at the blue and white so much more.
