Andrei Caracut is learning to be a leader in his fourth season
Andrei Caracut was hailed as the Rookie of the Year in UAAP Season 78.
Fast forward to Season 81 and Caracut has spent the next three years flying under the radar just as the likes of Aljun Melecio, Ben Mbala, Santi Santillan, and now, even Justine Baltazar have taken center stage for De La Salle University.
Through it all, Caracut said he never lost confidence. “Sa akin naman talaga, until now, yung kumpyansa ko buong-buo talaga,” he said.
That confidence hasn’t translated into numbers in the ongoing tournament, however, as the fourth-year guard’s per game counts through the first seven games are 8.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.1 assists.
Indeed, Green Archers mentor Louie Gonzalez wants more – because just about everybody knows Caracut could give more. “Siguro, nasanay siya for the last two years sa routine niya na parang nagiging pareho lang. I spoke to him that I need him, I need him, I need him,” he shared.
He then continued, “Malaki kasi talaga ang role niya sa team na ‘to hindi lang bilang co-captain, pero Andrei himself, alam naman natin kung ano ang kaya niyang ibigay.”
As it turns out, that talk with Gonzalez has only made the co-captain better. “Naging challenge ‘to na kailangan ko na ring mag-lead ng team, maging good example sa team. Para sa akin, naging mabuti rin yung nangyari kasi kailangan talagang pumukpok, magtrabaho e,” he said.
At long last, it all came to fruition for Caracut as he scored a season-best 16 points to go along with six rebounds and two assists in La Salle’s back-to-back wins at the expense of University of the East on Wednesday. “Yung mindset ko lang talaga siguro, kailangan hanapin ko muna sarili ko bago hanapin yung mga kakampi ko, pero dapat, within the system pa rin,” he said.
He then continued, “Siguro, nagawa ko naman yun ngayon – nag-provide ako ng score at natulungan ko yung teammates ko.”
