Pasaol on MVP chances in UAAP 81: 'Gusto ko lang manalo'
The MVP is far from the mind of award contender Alvin Pasaol

Alvin Pasaol is Bright Akhuetie’s closest competitor in the MVP race after the first round of the UAAP 81 Men’s Basketball Tournament.

With averages of 23.7 points, 10.1 rebounds, 1.6 steals, University of the East’s main man has already accumulated 71.57 Statistical Points (SPs) – just around five points away from pacesetter Akhuetie.

This, even though he doesn’t have the benefit of that much win bonus as the Red Warriors only have one win to show after eight games.

For Pasaol himself, however, the MVP is far from his mind. “Wala sa akin yun. Gusto ko lang manalo kami,” he told reporters after their latest loss on Wednesday.

And for them to do that, the third-year forward knows full well he needs to keep doing what he’s doing – and much more. “Mas maganda yung leader ka in action kaysa lip service lang yung ginagawa mo,” he said.

Of course, Pasaol also knows full well that he cannot be a one-man show. “Sinasabi ko sa kanila na maglaro sila nang mabuti, kaming lahat, maglaro lang nang mabuti. Nandito lang ako sa likod nila,” he shared.

He then continued, “Kung kailangan nila ako, nandito lang ako.”

And even though they find themselves at the bottom of the standings at the start of the second round, last year’s Mythical selection still has full faith they have a shot at the playoffs. As he put it, “Kaya pa namin. Push pa namin ang sarili namin na kailangan naming gumawa.”

He then continued, “Gusto naming yung standing namin last season, lamangan pa namin.”
