Angelo Kouame was a force all game long for Ateneo which routed FEU even without Matt Nieto, Mike Nieto, and Thirdy Ravena
Angelo Kouame has turned in his best game in the UAAP 81 Men’s Basketball Tournament just when it mattered most for Ateneo de Manila University.
Kouame overwhelmed anybody put in front of him to let the Blue Eagles overcome the absence of Matt Nieto, Mike Nieto, and Thirdy Ravena for a wire-to-wire 82-62 win against Far Eastern University on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum.
The rookie recruit from Cote d’Ivoire posted a monster 33-point, 27-rebound double-double. “We’re very happy with the win and also very happy with his performance,” assistant coach Sandy Arrespacochaga said.
He got going right from tip-off and scored four points in the defending champions’ 9-2 start to the game.
The Tamaraws rallied to tie the tally at 16-all after the opening salvo only to see Kouame again power his team to an 18-6 second quarter. “We took advantage of our opportunities. FEU was locking down on our shooters so that’s why Ange was freed up,” coach Sandy said.
They would never look back all the way back to joint first now at 7-2.
Anton Asistio also added 15 points to help make up for the loss of the Nieto twins who just came from a bout with dengue and Ravena who is serving a one-game suspension.
For FEU, Russell Escoto showed the way with a 13-point, 13-rebound double-double and Hubert Cani chipped in his own 13 markers.
After Prince Orizu exited the game with an apparent leg injury in the first quarter, however, they just had no answers for Kouame and ultimately dropped to 5-4 in the standings.
