Dave Ildefonso put the finishing touches even as Troy Rike had his best game in NU's first winning streak in UAAP Season 81.
National University is finally streaking in the 81st Season of the UAAP Men’s Basketball Tournament.
And on Sunday at the Filoil Flying V Centre, it was Troy Rike who served as both the engine and the fuel that propelled the Bulldogs past University of Sto. Tomas, 69-61, and to their first back-to-back wins in the season.
The first-year Filipino-American player had for himself a breakout game with 13 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Of course, Dave Ildefonso was right there with him with his own 16 markers, four boards, and three dimes.
“It’s not me. It’s just 16 players responding right now and the two here are the ones who shone the brightest,” head coach Jamike Jarin said post-game.
On their shoulders, NU finished the job on an elimination round sweep of the Growling Tigers.
More importantly, though, the win improves their record to 3-6 and inches them closer to the middle of the pack in the playoff race. “Hopefully, we get the same result the rest of the way,” coach Jamike said.
Much of it was thanks to Rike who made all the plays in the 8-0 run that turned a one-point deficit into a 41-34 advantage at the six-minute mark of the third quarter.
A buzzer-beating triple from Dave Wilson Yu then mounted the biggest lead of the game for the Bulldogs, 53-42, entering the final frame.
Still, UST kept coming with Renzo Subido and Marvin Lee shooting them to just within one, 56-57, inside the last five minutes.
It was at that point, however, that super rookie Ildefonso came through with seven points in an 8-2 counter that put NU on top once and for all, 65-58.
Subido paced the Growling Tigers with 18 points while Lee chipped in 12 markers of his own. Their own super rookie Cansino had an off-game in terms of shooting with just eight points, but also had 18 rebounds and five assists.
Getting swept in the eliminations by the Bulldogs, however, they dropped to 4-5 in the standings.
