"CJ really brings out the best in me." -- Dave Ildefonso
Coming into the UAAP Season 81, a lot of buzz has been around two blue-chip rookies, namely National University's Dave Ildefonso and University of Santo Tomas' CJ Cansino.
As the season went on, the matchup between the two rookies have been nothing but entertaining.
In the second round edition of NU versus UST, Cansino recorded eight points, 18 rebounds, and five assists. Despite the impressive line, it was Ildefonso who had the last laugh with 16 points, four rebounds, three asists, and a resounding victory. Ildefonso also steered the Bulldogs to a sweep of the Tigers in the eliminations.
In the dying minutes of the tough match, UST showed signs that they can take the game away from the leading NU, but Ildefonso took matters in his own hands. With their lead just down to one, 57-56, it was Ildefonso who racked up points for his squad which snapped UST's momentum.
He did all this with Cansino guarding him. It was as if playing against his batchmate motivates him more.
"[CJ] does really brings out the best in me. Magaling na player eh, so you have to perform para at least magka level kayo or he is just one step above," said the 18-year-old star.
"Galing eh. 18 rebounds no? 18 rebounds, five assists, eight points. Really great player talaga," Ildefonso added while looking at the stat sheet.
Ildefonso has nothing but good things to say about his competitor. In fact, he even playfully conceded on the Rookie of the Year race.
"Sa rate na ginagawa niya ngayon, feeling ko siya na ang Rookie of the Year. He really deserves it," Ildefonso said before remembering another possible candidate for the ROY award, first-year player Angelo Kouame of the Ateneo Blue Eagles.
"Unless pwede si Ange [Kouame], kung pwede si Ange, wag na natin pagusapan," Ildefonso said on Kouame who recently had a 33-point game.
Regardless who will get the top individual honors for rookies, it's just safe to say that Ildefonso loves playing against Cansino.
"Years to come sana maglaban pa kami more and we're gonna have mutual improvement sa isa't isa. I look forward to seeing him again," said Ildefonso.
