Are you seeing shades of Scottie Thompson in CJ Cansino?
CJ Cansino didn’t score much in University of Sto. Tomas’ loss to National University on Sunday.
The super rookie only had eight points in 2-of-9 shooting in 34.5 minutes of action.
He, however, made his presence felt on the boards and making plays with 18 rebounds and five assists.
Yes, you read that right – Cansino, standing at 6-foot-2, had 18 rebounds to his name.
In doing so, he outworked even the likes of taller teammates in Enric Caunan, Zachy Huang, and Germy Mahinay as well as Bulldog bigs Issa Gaye, Troy Rike, and Shaun Ildefonso – none of which hit double-digits in rebounding.
For reference, just at halftime, the Growling Tigers’ promising youngster already had 11 rebounds to his name.
As it turns out, the damage Cansino has been doing on the glass was inspired by, of course, his idol – another rebounding guard you might have heard of named Scottie Thompson. “Ako kasi, Ginebra fan ako e. Since birth, lahing Ginebra so nung rookie year pa lang ni Scottie, idol ko na siya,” he said.
The third-year Gin King has averaged 9.3 rebounds in the ongoing 2018 PBA Governor’s Cup.
UST’s super rookie? Well, he has per game counts of 10.5 rebounds through nine games.
And the fact that Thompson has made waves by turning rebounds into highlights makes Cansino believe he could very well do the same. “Kailan lang, ‘di ba, may kinuhanan siya na rebound na import? Tumatak sa isip ko yun na kung si Scottie Thompson kaya, bakit ako, hindi,” he said.
That play Cansino was talking about was Thompson’s monster grab over the arms of Rain or Shine reinforcement Terrence Watson.
Make no mistake, however, that the 19-year-old is on the hunt for highlights.
All he wants to do is his job. “Yung rebounding nap o kasi yung naging role ko para sa team. Maliliit kami, ‘di ganun kalaki bigs namin so kailangan ko pumasok para makatulong sa rebound,” he said.
