UAAP: What do Juan GDL and Marvin Cruz have in common?

The last two players to have gotten a triple-double in the UAAP both come from UP
Juan Gomez de Liano is the first player to tally a triple-double in the UAAP in 12 years.
With 15 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists, he was, without a doubt, a big part of the University of the Philippines’ much-needed win against University of the East last Sunday.
Before him, it was another Fighting Maroon in Marvin Cruz who had the league’s last triple-double in a loss to Ateneo de Manila University in August 2006.
As it turns out, Juan GDL and Cruz share more of a connection than just hailing from State U and having triple-double games.
“I talk to him. Sometimes, I would go to UPIS practices kasi assistant siya dun,” Juan GDL shared. “So minsan, I go with sina Jordi.”
Juan GDL came from UP Integrated School before being promoted to the Seniors squad. He also has a younger brother in Jordi GDL still suiting up there.
Cruz, on the other hand, is now serving as an assistant coach for Paolo Mendoza.
And apparently, during their training sessions, Juan GDL is a firsthand witness to the talent that allowed Cruz to collect 22 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists in one game. “Super galing ni coach Marv,” he said.
In that light, the current UP superstar is nothing but glad to be making another kind of bond with the one-time pride of his alma mater. As he put it, “It’s really overwhelming for me na galing UP ulit yung nag-triple-double.”
