Thirdy Ravena was red-hot at Ateneo claimed the first playoff berth in the UAAP 81
Ateneo de Manila University had no problems whatsoever as it clinched the first playoff berth in the UAAP 81 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Thirdy Ravena stroked the nets for a total of 23 points and the Blue Eagles staked claim to a place in the Final Four after making quick work of National University, 79-64, on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Ravena was red-hot from the get-go and had 16 points in just 11 minutes in the first half.
He definitely wasn’t alone, however, as Ange Kouame also remained a force even against Issa Gaye who is just as tall and long-limbed as he is.
It was Ravena and Kouame who scored all but two points in the defending champions’ 10-0 start.
They would never trail until the final buzzer
The Ateneo lead would only increase to as much as 24 points and would eventually end as their ninth win in 11 games.
Ravena also added 12 rebounds, three assists, one steal, and one block while Kouame posted another double-double of 19 points and 17 boards to go along with six denials
Prized rookie SJ Belangel also had much-welcome contributions of 11 points, three assists, and two rebounds as lead guard Matt Nieto continues to sit out.
With that, they have also increased their lead in the standings over second-running 8-2 Adamson University.
And the Soaring Falcons just so happen to be up next on the Blue Eagles’ calendar.
For the Bulldogs, their super rookies were the lone bright spots as John Lloyd Clemente scored a career-high 25 points while Dave Ildefonso had 13 markers of his own. Now at 3-7, they have been pushed to the brink of elimination.
