Vision? Check. Unselfishness? Yup. Numbers? Affirmative. Juan Gomez de Liano has taken the leap in his second year in UP, and it has Beau Belga gushing with his potential. (File Photo)
Rain or Shine forward Beau Belga believes University of the Philippines sophomore point guard Juan Gomez de Liano reminds him of his former college teammate and PBA veteran Jayson Castro.
In an interview in The Score alongside host Mico Halili, Belga was all praise for Gomez de Liano, who dropped the first triple-double in the UAAP since 2006 when he went for 15 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists in the Fighting Maroons' win over the Red Warriors last October 21.
Belga, who played for the Philippine Christian University Dolphins alongside Castro, saw Juan's performance and compared the young Maroon's unselfishness to his former teammate, who was dubbed as the best point guard in Asia a few years back.
"Hindi [siya] matakaw sa tira, kahit hawak niya bola iniisip niya pa rin niya mga kasama niya," Belga said. "Parang naiisip ko sa kanya Jayson Castro, kasi si Jayson dati kapag nag-ball screen siya, last option siya lagi hinahanap niya muna yung big man. Si Gabby (Espinas) sila Robert (Sanz) so yun muna inuuna niya, more than kay sa sarili niya."
Belga, a 10-year PBA veteran also said tallying a triple-double can be more difficult in Philippine college basketball than in the pros, because of ten-minute quarters as opposed to twelve in the PBA, as well as the talent involved.
"Hindi mo naman makukumpara yung college sa pro, kasi yung pro, halos pag pinasahan mo, medyo sureball na," Belga argued.
When Gomez de Liano doesn't find an open teammate, he can get buckets as well, and Belga likes the way the younger GDL can get to the rim, especially since he can throw it down.
Of course, there's his rebounding and knack for the ball. Belga puts GDL's 12 rebounds into perspective by comparing his college numbers from back in the day. "Yung ganun kalaki? May kakampi pang Bright Akhuetie. Eh ako nung college ako, pinakamarami ko yata ten? Sentro pa laro ko noon," he said.
Belga was also impressed by Ateneo's rookie center, the Ivorian Angelo Kouame who had a monster 33-point, 27-rebound performance against FEU last October 20.
"Alam niyang kailangan niya mag step-up kasi wala yung Nieto Brothers, wala si Thirdy Ravena," he said.
