UAAP: Melecio on FT woes: 'Mas titira na lang ako ng three points'

Aljun Melecio was not himself from the free throw line up against Ateneo
Aljun Melecio was the seventh best free throw shooter in the UAAP 81 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
After his struggles from the line against archrival Ateneo de Manila University on Sunday, however, he has fallen out of the top 10.
After missing just 10 free throws in the first 12 games of the season for a 29-of-39 clip, Melecio missed six charities out of nine up against the Blue Eagles.
Without a doubt, those woes contributed to the Green Archers’ 62-71 loss to their archrivals.
Post-game, the third-year guard was left at a loss at his struggles. “’Di ko alam. ‘Di ko makontrol yung bola sa free throw e,” he said.
He then continued, “’Di naman pressured. ‘Di ko lang matantsa yung free throw kanina.”
Throughout his career, Melecio has been steady from the line – he shot 73.3 percent in his first two seasons in the Seniors and 76.8 percent in his last year in the Juniors.
That definitely wasn’t the case in this one, however, as it got so bad that he jokingly said he would have opted for a more difficult shot rather than freebies. “Mas titira na lang ako ng three points, wag lang yung free throws,” he joshed.
Still, that may have been a legitimate alternative as this season, he has converted at an above average mark of 35.5 percent from long distance.
Nonetheless, La Salle’s scoring dynamo said all of this is just a teaching moment for him. As he put it, “Lesson learned. Kung magmumukmok lang ako, walang mangyayari. I just have to work on my free throws.”
Don’t expect him to do what he did the last time the Green Archers succumbed to the Blue Eagles, however. “Hindi na muna. Pahinga muna ako,” he said through chuckles when asked if he would there would be some extra shooting for him tonight.
