UAAP: Mentor Jeff Napa actually helping JLC break his record
Jeff Napa is only continuing to mentor John Lloyd Clemente - even if the latter is trying his best to break the former's record

John Lloyd Clemente has been on a tear for National University in the last two games.

Four days after dropping 17 of his 19 points in the first half, he was white-hot all throughout and totaled 38 points on Sunday.

Even after he registered the highest scoring output from a player this season, though, his mentor, of course, only saw room for improvement. “Okay naman ang performance niya, marami lang pilit tsaka masyadong gigil. Akala siguro niya, ganun kadali yun,” Jeff Napa said.

He then continued, “Nung nag-settle down na siya, nakuha na niya ulit. Bata pa e, matututunan pa niya yun along the way.”

Napa and Clemente were together in Nazareth School of NU for three years and won one championship there. The former now serves as consultant for the Seniors squad while the latter is now a rising star for the Bulldogs.

And so, from then until now, Napa has been a mentor to Clemente.

Still, Clemente has just made known that he is gunning for a milestone that only a few people, including Napa, have reached. “Sabi ko kay coach Jeff, ibe-break ko record mo,” he said.

Back in 2002 when he was still playing for NU, Napa scored 43 points build on a league record-tying 10 triples.

Since then, several Bulldogs have tried to do what he did. Ray Parks Jr. only got as close as 35 points in 2012 while J-Jay Alejandro only got as close as 31 points in 2016.

“Daming humahamon sa akin, pero walang nagtagumpay,” Napa said. “As of now, ako pa rin ang may hawak ng record kaya target-in nila yun. Good luck na lang sa kanya at saka sa mga nagbabalak kumuha ng record ko.”

Now, the latest challenger is coach Jeff’s own mentee.

And because of their relationship, Napa is nothing but confident that Clemente has the best chance at breaking his record. Asked if the latter would finally be the player to do just that, the former answered, full of confidence, “Definitely.”

He was quick to add, though, “Basta makuha lang niya yung tamang sikreto. Mahirap gawin yan kung pansariling iisipin mo.”
