Juan GDL has just proven that he is a man of his word
Safe to say, along with ice, Juan Gomez de Liano has confidence running through his veins.
That is exactly why the University of the Philippines’ second-year stud had a promise to his fans even before the beginning of UAAP Season 81. “I could say the Final Four is a sure spot for us,” he said then.
After a 3-5 record in the first eight games, that looked like a farfetched idea for the Fighting Maroons.
But then, something just clicked and they wound up their campaign by winning five of the last six games.
For Juan GDL, neither he nor his teammates ever stopped believing. “I knew it was coming. I actually thought na last year pa nga dapat sana, but we fell short,” he said.
He then continued, “I promised ever since offseason na we’re gonna make the Final Four. Here we are.”
Indeed, with a convincing victory versus De La Salle University, State U booked a ticket into the Final Four for the first time since 1997.
And they got it just the way team captain Paul Desiderio wanted them to – “16 Strong.”
In the end, Juan GDL had 27 points, four assists, and three rebounds while kuya Javi had his own 19 markers built on five triples.
MVP frontrunner Bright Akhuetie posted another double-double of 16 points and 20 rebounds while Desiderio chipped in 10 markers, four rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
“We just stayed together as one unit. We never gave up even though there were a lot of struggles and ups and downs,” Juan GDL said. “We just stayed together and that was the most important thing.”
