After just one game, Ateneo de Manila High School’s title defense in the UAAP 81 Juniors Basketball Tournament has already hit a speed bump.
The Blue Eaglets will be missing court general Forthsky Padrigao for the rest of the first round after he underwent surgery for appendicitis last Wednesday.
According to Padrigao himself, his doctor advised that he shouldn’t play basketball for what’s left of the year. “Sabi po ng doctor na no basketball muna for this year,” he said.
That rules him out for Ateneo’s next six games.
This also means that the 16-year-old will have to wait before being able to build on his 13-point, nine-rebound, and six-assist debut in a win for the blue and white to start the season last Sunday.
A transferee from Adamson High School, he has been tasked to fill in the big shoes left behind by SJ Belangel – shoes that would primarily lead him into making plays for generational talent Kai Sotto.
Still, Padrigao remains confident that he will be back in action just as the Blue Eaglets’ title defense heats up. “Hopefully, aabot ako ng second round,” he said.
When that time comes, he promises one thing and one thing only to the faithful over at Katipunan. “I promise na I’ll come back stronger for my brothers and for the Ateneo community,” he said.
