"Just one point lang na nadagdag sa score it could have spelled the difference of the podium finish so sayang." -- Mark Chaiwalla, Head Coach of UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe
With a grand theme as big as the Queen B, the UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe gave it their all in the UAAP Season 81 Cheerdance Competition. Dancing to the hit songs of Beyonce, Run the World, Single Ladies, and Crazy in Love, UST had the whole Mall of Asia Arena under their spell.
Given a powerful performance that gave justice to such an iconic theme, it was just natural for the squad and its community to expect for a podium finish.
However, come the announcement, UST was not even called. With downcast eyes and broken hearts, the performers and coaches consoled each other. Regardless of the results, they know they made their community proud and happy.
"Sa akin lang, okay lang talaga kasi after the performance I was really happy already just with the performance itself. I was telling them na guys okay lang yan, the performance itself could already speak for us and the Thomasian community was happy," said UST's head coach Mark Chaiwalla.
At first, the UST mentor was fine with the results but after checking the tally sheet, he can't help but feel pain after realizing that they were just half a point away from the second runner-up, the Adamson Pep Squad.
"What just bothers me right now is nung nakita ko yung score sheet. Just point five difference to get in to the podium," he said as UST finished at 638 points while Adamson was at 638.5.
Chaiwalla has no one to blame but his team too as he referred to the errors they committed during the still very entertaining number.
"Alam mo yung mga errors nila kanina, very kayang kaya nila yun eh, but it happened and just one point lang na nadagdag sa score it could have spelled the difference of the podium finish so sayang," he said.
UST had 10 points deducted from them due to errors throughout the routine. Adamson on the other hand only had two.
Despite falling short, UST still won the hearts of UAAP CDC followers. Salinggawi's official hashtag #DivaSantoTomas was trending on Twitter second in the Philippines and third worldwide.
"I'm thankful because this routine, we're not just doing this for ourselves, it is for the people who continue to support us. We're doing it for the Thomasian community and the fact that they've really liked what we've prepared for them that is a really big consolation for us," Chaiwalla said after he was informed of the love his squad received online.
Looking forward, after this heartbreaking finish, the youthful mentor just assured that whatever pain they are feeling right now will only just fuel them for a sure podium finish by Season 82.
"Feeling ko pareho kami ng naramdaman ng NU last year," he said referring to the Bulldogs' fifth place finish last season, "We're much hungrier, [next year] we're gonna make sure, we're really gonna make sure."
Continue slaying, Salinggawi!
