Mark Nonoy, a 5'8 guard, posted 17 points, 16 rebounds, and 12 assists in 34 minutes of action in a 75-63 win against the UPIS Junior Maroons.
The UST juniors' basketball program must really be back in full swing right now.
Just a season after producing UAAP Juniors MVP CJ Cansino, the Tiger Cubs might have found a diamond in the rough in the person of 18-year old Mark Nonoy, who has already tallied a triple-double in just his second game.
Being a Grade 12 student, people may be wondering where Nonoy is headed next, but he indicated that already sees a future for himself inside the 27.5-hectare campus in Sampaloc.
"Stay po ako sa UST. Matagal na, yun ang offer sa akin. Na mag-stay hanggang college."
This is after the 5'8 guard posted a triple-double of 17 points, 16 rebounds, and 12 assists in 34 minutes of action in a 75-63 win against the UPIS Junior Maroons.
In the previous game, his UAAP debut against the defending champions Ateneo Blue Eaglets, Nonoy led the team in scoring by leaps and bounds, the lone double-digit scorer for the team, scoring 31 points, and added six rebounds and five assists.
The next highest scorer, Batang Gilas player Bismarck Lina scored nine.
Even Tiger Cubs coach Bonnie Garcia was overwhelmed with his newfound revelation, and honestly did not expect such an explosion.
"Pero he's a very good player. Very, very athletic. Tine-taper lang namin kasi second game pa lang ng season, naka-triple double na agad. Baka sumobra to. Sumobra sa ineexpect namin. Kaya dinadahan-dahan lang natin yung mga minutong nilalaro niya," the veteran coach shared.
A representative of the Western Visayas region, Nonoy caught the eye of many scouts scouring the 2018 Palarong Pambansa in Ilocos Sur, especially after he had a 43-point explosion against Northern Mindanao in the quarterfinals.
There, he committed to one of the most decorated basketball programs of the 81-year old league, the 18-time seniors champions UST.
In his UAAP debut, Nonoy shared how he was feeling the jitters in his first game inside the sweltering Blue Eagle Gym against Ateneo, but eventually lost it as the game went by.
"First time ko kasi dito sa big league ng Pilipinas. Sabi ni coach, adjust lang kami. Sandal lang kami sa kung anong sistema ginagawa namin sa training. Basta yun lang ang gagawin namin sa laro."
Against UP, the former Hua Siong College of Iloilo product lamented his eight turnovers, but vows to rectify his mistakes when he sees his own performance before the screen.
When asked if he'd be able to do those eye-popping stats once again, the one-and-done has this to say.
"Try lang. Yun lang po."
