Troy Rike ends his NU career with a much-welcome win
It was all a matter of saving the best for last for Troy Rike in the UAAP 81 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Turning in the best game, Rike towed National University past University of the East all the way to a 79-71 decision on Sunday at the MOA Arena.
The Filipino-American big man scored 17 points and secured 13 rebounds while Issa Gaye was also a force with 12 markers, six boards, and eight blocks to show the Bulldogs the way to their fourth win in 14 games.
This, after Rike only averaged 5.5 points and 4.6 rebounds heading into the game.
The wards of coach Jamike were in control for majority of the matchup.
The Red Warriors last threatened at 42-47 in the middle of the third, but Gaye and Rike’s back-to-back baskets and bonuses punctuated an 11-2 counter that put NU back ahead, 58-44, late in the quarter.
That would be more than enough for them to avoid tying their worst record in a decade.
With Rike and Gaye taking charge, neither Dave Ildefonso nor John Lloyd Clemente had to do much heavy lifting for them to score a much-welcome win. Ildefonso just had nine points, six rebounds, and six assists while Clemete only had two markers, seven boards, and three dimes.
For the Red Warriors, they close their campaign at 1-13. In what may very well be his last game in red and white, Alvin Pasaol posted a 20-point, 14-rebound double-double on top of four steals and two steals.
Jason Varilla, also graduating, chipped in 10 points of his own.
