FIGHTING FOR THIS MAROON. Javi Gomez de Liano was not let go by the UP program which nurtured him into becoming a Mythical selection.
They were a little late, but the University of the Philippines have barged into the offseason recruitment party.
In a promising sign for their basketball program, the Fighting Maroons have secured the services of homegrown prized prospect Javi Gomez de Liaño. “Proud to stick it out here in Diliman,” he expressed to ABS-CBN Sports.
The six-foot five-inch forward is a wily inside operator with a knack for rebounds. He averaged 15.2 points and 8.5 rebounds en route to a Mythical selection in his last season as a Junior Maroon.
However, Gomez de Liaño said he is working on transitioning into becoming more of a ballhandler because he “won’t be ‘big’ in college anymore.”
Asked why he chose a UP side which is yet to come close to the playoffs in recent years instead of Ateneo de Manila University who had interest in him, the Mythical selection said, “Education was really my main criteria.”
He then continued, “Also loyalty to the school because I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for UP and I want to show my gratitude to them.”
