UAAP: Coach Tab says Ateneo 'not interested in individual stuff'

Ateneo is not sweating not having anybody on the Mythical Team
Ateneo de Manila University, the defending champion and the top-seed in the ongoing UAAP 81 Men’s Basketball Tournament, will not have a player on the Mythical Team.
This season’s top five individual players hail from the University of the Philippines (Bright Akhuetie, Juan Gomez de Liano), University of the East (Alvin Pasaol), De La Salle University (Justine Baltazar), and Adamson University (Jerrick Ahanmisi).
And so, for the first time since 2013, not one of the Mythical selections is a Blue Eagle.
Still, barring any complications, Katipunan will celebrate its first Rookie of the Year in four years in the form of Ivorian tower Angelo Kouame.
Asked to comment on the individual awardees from his team, however, head coach Tab Baldwin answered, in his usual sure and certain tone, “I couldn’t care less. We couldn’t care less. We’re not interested in individual stuff.”
He then continued, “It’s all statistics-based. When players play for statistics, they’re doing the wrong thing. Commenting on that sort of stuff is pointless for me because I just don’t care about it.”
Indeed, in the American-Kiwi mentor’s three seasons at the helm, balance and team glory has always been Ateneo’s trademark.
And this season, their leading scorer is already Kouame at 14.4 points per game. This, compared to the league’s leading scorer, Pasaol, who averages 24.4 points per game.
After the presumptive Rookie of the Year, five Blue Eagles contribute somewhere between five to 12 points per game.
Without a doubt, statistics is far from the mind of coach Tab and his wards.
So much so that, according to him, he didn’t even know that Kouame was well on his way onto an award or that they had no players on the Mythical Team. “I didn’t even know that. That doesn’t worry me in the least,” he said.
He then continued, “If that’s what we play for, then we got the wrong guys.”
