Game 2 of the UAAP 81 Finals did not start on time
The tip-off of Game 2 of the UAAP 81 Finals was late by 10 minutes after Ateneo de Manila University questioned the brace on the left knee of the University of the Philippines’ Bright Akhuetie.
Starters of the two teams had already made it out onto the middle of the Araneta Coliseum court on Wednesday before the Blue Eagles’ bench called the attention of game officials.
Ateneo’s coaching staff was questioning what appeared to be metal pieces on the left knee brace of Akhuetie. “You’re asking not to play by the rules. You’re making it out as we’re to blame. Know what you’ve done,” head coach Tab Baldwin was heard telling referees over broadcast.
Akhuetie was wearing a reinforced brace four days after he sustained a hyperextended left knee in Game 1.
Initially, the league doctor allowed him to play with it, but the Blue Eagles made it known that league rules state that braces made of leather, plastic, metal, or any hard substance, even if covered with soft padding is not allowed.

Not long after, game officials approached the UP bench to tell Akhuetie that he needs to remove the reinforced brace. “Kailangan po niyang tanggalin para makalaro,” a referee was head telling head coach Bo Perasol.
Akhuetie only heeded the call.
The game tipped off at 4:40, 10 minutes later than the scheduled tip-off of 4:30.
