UAAP Season 81: Castillo mum on NU status
Wala pa naman sila nilalabas na official statement so I cannot say anything muna -- Babes Castillo on his status with National University

Babes Castillo declined to comment on reports of his sacking as head coach of National University’s girls’ and women’s volleyball teams.

Rumors of his replacement circulated on social media before the Christmas break and days after the Bullpups saw their four-year reign in the UAAP girls’ volleyball snapped by De La Salle-Zobel in a series sweep.

“Regarding sa NU, I cannot comment on that,” said Castillo in a message.

A source told ABS-CBN that Castillo will be replaced by Norman Miguel as mentor of the Lady Bulldogs while Regine Diego will assume his spot with the Bullpups.

Miguel, who also declined to comment pending the management’s official announcement, was DLSU men’s team head coach last year. The Green Spikers tapped Arnold Laniog as his replacement.

“I really cannot tell you anything right now,” said Castillo. “Wala pa naman sila nilalabas na official statement so I cannot say anything muna.”

Castillo steered the Bullpups to seven straight championship appearances since Season 75, winning four in a row from Season 77 to 80. The mentor replaced Roger Gorayeb as the Lady Bulldogs’ head coach after Season 79.

Under his watch, the Lady Bulldogs won six of its seven games the opening round but only got one win in the second half of the elimination round.

NU managed to advance in the Final Four in the towering 6-foot-5 Jaja Santiago’s last playing year after three seasons but were overpowered by eventual grand slam winner DLSU.

The Lady Bulldogs will be a rebuilding team come UAAP Season 81 next month after the departure of  main offensive option Santiago. Veteran hitter Jorelle Singh is expected to skip this year’s tournament while prized setter Jasmine Nabor has yet to decide if she will suit up this season.

Rookies Princess Robles, playmaker Joy Cagande, Ivy Lacsina and libero Jennifer Nierva, all members of the successful NU girls program, will be tested in the seniors division.

Castillo to Sta. Lucia

Castillo’s status with NU may be uncertain but the amiable mentor got a call from the Sta. Lucia as its new head coach for the 2019 season of the Philippine Superliga.

Castillo will take the place left by George Pascua as the Lady Realtors prepare for the import-laden Grand Prix starting February 9.

“Lagi naman may expectations, hindi naman mawawala ‘yan. They [management] just told me to bring up the ranking,” said Castillo.

The team had a series of try-outs last week and Castillo is expected to come up with the final list of his local roster next week.

Sta. Lucia had a disappointing outing in the season-ending All-Filipino Conference last year after dropping all of its 11 outings.
