Jermaine Byrd, reportedly the new head coach of De La Salle University, made his first public appearance in green and white on Wednesday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Byrd was in attendance in the continuation of the UAAP 81 Juniors Basketball Tournament, watching a matchup between Ateneo de Manila High School and University of the East.
He was sitting beside Danny Seigle who is also reportedly part of the Green Archers’ coaching staff alongside MC Abolucion and Chappy Callanta.
Asked for an interview, though, both Byrd and Seigle politely declined before adding that they will be coming out with an official statement soon.
As per several sources, however, Byrd and his brand new staff have already overseen a few training sessions for La Salle since the new year began.
Byrd’s most extensive coaching experience comes from the NBA G-League where he served as assistant coach for the Tulsa 66ers, Sioux Falls Skyforce, and LA Defenders.
After that, he had stints in the Korean Basketball League with the Samsung Thunders and Goyang Orions.
Now with the Green Archers, he will have Mythical selection Justine Baltazar, team captain Andrei Caracut, and scoring dynamo Aljun Melecio leading the charge.
He replaces Louie Gonzalez who goes one-and-done as head coach after going 8-6 and missing out on the Final Four.
