Nazareth School of National University is the first team through to the Final Four of the UAAP 81 Juniors Basketball Tournament.

Without a doubt, though, they had to fight for each and every inch as they made their way there.

The Bullpups were pushed to the limit before Gerry Abadiano took over to push off very game De La Salle Zobel for an 82-67 decision on Wednesday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

Abadiano scored 20 points on top of 15 rebounds and four assists to shoot the league-leaders onto the first of four seats for the playoffs. “Kami naman, one game at a time pa rin kasi nga there will be games like today na we get tested and we have to come through,” head coach Goldwin Monteverde said.

The heady guard turned it on when it mattered most for NU as he dropped 11 of his scoring output in the last six minutes. “He played good, but more than our offense, I think it was our defense that stepped up sa dulo,” his mentor said.

Indeed, alongside Abadiano’s offense, the Bullpups’ defense stood strong in the endgame, allowing them to deliver a 21-6 knockout blow to put the game away.

Carl Tamayo posted an 11-point, 12-rebound double-double while Jeff Mailim chipped in eight markers to help make up for the loss of scoring dynamo Terrence Fortea who incurred a disqualifying foul in the first quarter.

Fortea will now have to serve a one-game suspension in their next assignment on Sunday. He will also no longer be eligible for individual awards.

For the Junior Archers, Jac Macasaet topped the scoring column with 12 points while Nat Sevilla gave his all and wound up with a 10-point, 13-rebound double-double. They fall to 4-7 in the standings, but not before giving the league-leaders a good scare.
