Ateneo de Manila ends their season on a strong note, beating finals-bound FEU, 4-3 to claim third place
Jose Lopez converted a late penalty as Ateneo fashioned out a come-from-behind 4-3 win over defending champion Far Eastern University-Diliman Sunday in the UAAP juniors football tournament.
The Blue Eaglets rallied from a two-goal deficit to end their campaign with 17 points in third place.
The Baby Tamaraws went down with 10 men, as Oliver Dalman was sent off in the 86th minute due to his second yellow card. It was Dalman's own goal in the 67th minute leveled the match at 3-3,
Aside from the 88th minute goal, Lopez also netted a spot kick in the 26th minute that opened the scoring for Ateneo, which rebounded from last year's worst finish ever by making it back to the podium.
Despite the loss, FEU-Diliman, which will take on National University in the one-game final on Feb. 21 at the Moro Lorenzo Field, topped the table with 17 points.
Also capping the season on a high note was De La Salle-Zobel, which bested University of Santo Tomas, 2-1, in the other match at the FEU-Diliman pitch.
Jed Bode was dismissed in the 35th minute for a straight red, but the 10-man Junior Archers survived with Jan Meir Mitra's 52nd minute goal.
De La Salle-Zobel, runner-ups in the last two years, saved the best for last by gaining full three points in the final matchday of the double-round eliminations. Notwithstanding the defeat, the Tiger Cubs still ended up in fourth spot with five points.
