Gerry Abadiano and Carl Tamayo showed NU the way past FEU and into their eighth win in a row
NU 13-1 (twice-to-beat)
Ateneo 11-3 (twice-to-beat)
FEU-Diliman 9-5 (Final Four)
Adamson 9-5 (Final Four)
Nazareth School of National University no longer had anything to play for other than pride on Sunday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Still, the Bullpups dug deep and then stood strong to best Far Eastern University, 81-75, to end the elimination round of the UAAP 81 Juniors Basketball Tournament on an eight-game win run.
The league leaders are already assured of the top-seed whatever happens and yet still went all-out to make sure they only had one loss to show in 14 games.
They proved themselves yet again in this one as the Baby Tamaraws remained alive and kicking inside the last three minutes, only down by two.
It was at that point, however, that Carl Tamayo took over and scored six of his 11 points in the 8-2 run that increased NU’s two-point edge into an 81-73 lead with 50.5 ticks to go on the clock.
From there, their defense would only allow their opponents just one more make to preserve their advantage as well as their well-earned win. “Nag-adjust yung team namin sa defense sa dulo. Yun yung magandang nangyari,” head coach Goldwin Monteverde said.
Tamayo also wound up with nine rebounds while team captain Gerry Abadiano and scoring dynamo Terrence Fortea contributed 20 and 16 markers, respectively.
After getting the better of FEU-Diliman, the Bullpups now turn their attention to another contender in Adamson High School – which just so happens to be the only team to have dealt them a defeat.
That matchup between twice-to-beat NU and the upstart Baby Falcons is scheduled on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
On the other hand, the Baby Tamaraws will now prepare for a semifinals showdown with also twice-to-beat Ateneo de Manila High School.
RJ Abarrientos paced them in this one with 23 points, seven assists, and four rebounds while Royce Alforque also added 14 markers, five boards, and four dimes.
